Reverb Reviews Hollywood Undead Denver Show | News

Live review: Hollywood Undead at the Fillmore Auditorium

By Paige Montgomery

Throwing darts at the T-shirt wall at Hot Topic could have chosen the lineup for Friday’s show at the Fillmore.

The World War III Tour had a little something for everyone featuring Hollywood Undead, Asking Alexandria, We Came as Romans and Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows.

The show was a random mash-up of post-hardcore, metal, and rap-rock artists complete with a dubstep set from DJ Borgore and two pole dancers, which raised the question: If the dancers are wearing tennis shoes does that make it appropriate for an all ages audience?

Asking Alexandria, We Came as Romans and D.R.U.G.S. each amped up the crowd with their individual brands of hardcore, but the combination of the heavy sets and the dubstep DJ made for an odd opening sequence.

The saving grace for the randomness of the show was the headlining set from Hollywood Undead which brought nuances of each previous genre together with a swagger and style that made you want to rush the stage. Sporting their signature hoodies and masks, the six-member SoCal band came out full-force with “Undead” and continued to develop the harder rock vibe of their show with “Been to Hell,” “Lights Out” and encore of “Hear Me Now” that closed the night.

The band had a playful side as well, making jokes about drinking and even making jabs at the Broncos. Tracks like “Everywhere I Go” and “Comin’ in Hot” turned the Fillmore into one big party.

Rap-rock might have been done before, but the L.A. edge Hollywood Undead lends to their image and the way they incorporate hard rock into their music puts them on their own level as far as the genre is concerned, which might be why they can’t find a bill to match.

HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD GET WORKED OVER

AMERICAN TRAGEDY REDUX OUT ON NOVEMBER 21st

Featuring Remixes By: Jonathan Davis, Andrew WK, KMFDM And More

UPCOMING TOUR DATES WITH AVENGED SEVENFOLD & ASKING ALEXANDRIA

New York --- 2011 has been a banner year for Hollywood Undead. The band’s sophomore release, American Tragedy, entered the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at number 4 this past spring and has sold almost a quarter of a million albums to date in the US alone. The album has spawned several hits including “Hear Me Now,” “Been To Hell,” “Coming Back Down,” and the latest single “Bullet.”

American Tragedy will get a new life this fall when American Tragedy Redux is released on November 21st on A&M/Octone Records. The album will featuring remixes of twelve tracks including “Been To Hell...And Back” (KMFDM), “Hear Me Now” (Jonathan Davis of Korn) and “My Town” (Andrew WK remix).

“This is our first remix record ever,” J-Dog from Hollywood Undead explains. “We got to pick the DJ`s and re-mixers that the band really likes. ‘Borgore’, ‘Jonathan Davis (Korn)’, ‘KMFDM’, ‘Andrew W.K.’ are a few on the list. Who would have thought that someone you grew up listening to would one day remix your song, Me…Bitch! So stay tuned, and hope you enjoy it. We hope it makes you sweat your tits off at your barnyard raves! Enjoy!”

Hollywood Undead will also continue to perform to standing room only crowds as they travel across the US as part of the World War III tour co-headlining with Asking Alexandria and then followed immediately with the Avenged Sevenfold on the Buried Alive arena tour, on which the band will be the main support. The band will also perform at the 48 Hours Festival in Las Vegas on October 15th.

Hollywood Undead are an explosive cocktail of hip hop, rock and metal, forging an alternative style that carved out a loyal and die-hard fan base since their debut on the LA scene in 2005. They craft incisive, sharp and sarcastic raps that slash the jugular of mainstream pop culture. Donning individual masks, Hollywood Undead possess a dark aesthetic that's connected to their hometown's depravity. Their debut release Swan Songs is now approaching sales of 1,000,000 copies, and platinum certification from the RIAA. Swan Songs spent 53 consecutive weeks on the aforementioned album chart, and re-charted in front of the release of American Tragedy.

Music Tour Reviews Checks Out Hollywood Undead! | News

By Peter Lizano

On this very hot & humid night, and the last night of Summerfest, the rock

stage was alive and ready to roll. With opening bands, Dirge Within & 10

Years the crowd was packed earlier than any other day of this festival;

tonight being the largest crowd this stage has seen in 11 days.

Never seeing Hollywood Undead before, I was curious as to how they would

pull this off live, with wearing masks and performing. I got there just as

the show was about to start. This show also had the largest amount of

photographers, so I had to work my way around for shots.

As the opening notes of Undead started, the place exploded and everyone was

jumping all over. All the guys came out in their signature masks that would

light up when the lights went low throughout the song. Being a fan of rap,

I noticed they had that hip-hop flow and swag to them as they moved all over

the stage taking turns to sing/rap.

After the 3rd song they all took their mask’s off and preformed the rest of

the show without them

Charlie Scene was doing duel work with his guitar slung close to him to play

that killer riff that Undead has. They followed up with Sell Your Soul –

one of my favs and features Da Kurlzz on drums & J-Dog on Keys and Been to

Hell off the new album, American Tragedy. Been to Hell has a very Linkin

Park feel to it, but with a HU twist to it that makes it their own. This

was one song I wondered if they could pull off live, but the intense live

performance crushed any doubts one might have about this group. With

Gangsta Sexy, they went back into a hip-hop flow and had the crowd moving

their hands from side to side. Being back stage at this time, I have to

say, it was an impressive site to see thousands of people moving together.

They played for about 1 ½ hours and a 16 song set that included, City, Black

Dahlia, My Town, No.5, and Young. As the night neared the end, the guys

thanked Milwaukee for showing them so much love and let them know they would

stay to sign at the merch booth for as long as it takes.

The encore was, Everywhere I Go and Hear Me Now. If you have never seen a

rock show where the crowd is bouncing up and down and not on concrete, but

all on long, metal bleacher chairs, you would have seen one tonight.

After the show the guys signed close to 1000+people item’s or just to say hi

to them.
The Rock Pit Reviews Hollywood Undead's American Tragedy | News

Hollywood Undead

“American Tragedy”

By Todd Jolicouer

After some experience in the studio and honing their skills on the road, Hollywood Undead now ready the world for an “American Tragedy.” They go for the jugular from the first strands of ‘Been To Hell.’ ‘Apologize,’ the next song, shows what they can do while making no apologies for what they do or how they do it. I have trouble finding any songs here that I don’t like. Each song is similar, but different. The themes are as recurring as the loops and beats in the rap breakdowns in each song.

Don’t be mistaken though, as the rock parts of each song are solid. The guitar work and musicianship is great. All of the members take their turn at the mic, as you can hear several different voices, even within each song at times. ‘Comin’ In Hot’ describes what the guys may encounter in any of L.A.’s night clubs and is followed by ‘My Town’, which is an anthemic tune about their home of L.A./Hollywood. The next two songs, ‘I Don’t Wanna Die’ and ‘Hear Me Now’ are introspective and address feelings of fear and depression. The latter has great hooks and guitar work. Next up are ‘Gangsta Sexy’ and ‘Glory.’ These are capable tunes, but lead you into better songs.

Several of the songs are written from a very interior view. ‘Lights Out’ was written about a former member who released a song about/against the band. ‘Coming Back Down’ deals with loss and ‘Bullet’ takes a light and lively approach at dealing with suicide. Sex, alcoholism, and love are the issues dealt with in ‘Levitate.’ The last two songs, ‘Pour Me’ and ‘Tendencies’ are great disc closers, with the former being performed from the view of an alcoholic in despair and the latter simply written as a moshpit song for the fans. The deluxe edition contains four bonus tracks – each one good enough to be on the disc – these are not throw away tracks! Love this disc and can’t wait to see them on May 21 performing these live on their headlining tour.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer Reviews Hollywood Undead's New Album | News

Music Review: Hollywood Undead - American Tragedy

By Lahiru Abeygunawardena

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Who is Hollywood Undead? What genre do they specialize in? Are they a rap crew or a heavy metal band? Most of all, are they human?

To answer these questions, first, I had to go through their debut album, titled Swan Songs. Then my writing came to an abrupt stop due to the heart pounding beats and tongue-twisting rhymes that kept exuding from my low-end desktop speakers that almost made me make up the "rock sign" using my fingers, which is alarming because I am a hardcore hip hop fan and a hater of ear-shattering screams. These guys are the bees' knees, I tell you.

Hollywood Undead is a rap-rock/rap-metal/rapcore band hailing from the entertainment capital, Los Angeles. The band consists of five members: Charlie Scene, Da Kurlzz, Danny, Funny Man, J-Dog, and Johnny 3 Tears. The uniqueness it possesses compared to other bands of today is their attire, which consists of each member dressed in a mask unique to him, therefore giving them an enigmatic persona for creative reasons.

The band was formed in 2005 with J-Dog and former member Deuce, who posted a demo of their work on Myspace, which thereby attracted a lot of attention. In the end, they ended up forming a seven-member band (including themselves) with former member Shady and the currently functional Johnny 3 Tears, Charlie Scene, Funny Man and Da Kurlzz.

The group was able to complete recording and mastering of their first album in a just a mere 12 months but faced tragedy for two years trying to get hold of a record label that didn't try to censor their content, which might be deemed degrading for sensitive ears.

After a long and tiresome search, Hollywood Undead landed a deal with A&M/Octone Records, which led to them debuting their much awaited 2008 album Swan Songs on the Billboard 200 at #22, selling a total of 21,000 copies in its first week. Swan Songs later went on to earn Gold status and is currently in the process of going Platinum.

It took the band around two-and-a-half years to release their sophomore (2011) album, titled American Tragedy, which features the first single and provocative video "Been To Hell." It focuses on the ugly side of the so-called celebrity haven, Hollywood.

The band then magnanimously released the single "Comin' In Hot" off their new album for free, which also led to the production of a music video. American Tragedy has sold around 66,000 copies since its first week a couple of weeks ago, when it landed #4 on the Billboard 200.

Their sound consists of live drum beats & electronic synthesizers combined with the traditional sound of electronic guitars and keyboards. A music enthusiast non-partial to any particular genre would identify the sound to contain ingredients of rap rock, nu metal, crunkcore, and even hints of party hip hop as well. The band had also mentioned that each of them specializes in an instrument, even though not all of them are seen to be playing them at concerts and other live events.

According to the band, each member is supposed to write and rap/sing his own lyrics, thereby ensuring that the entire band is not focused and held together by a single person.

Their lyrics on the album expel hatred, anger, lust, pain and downright obscenity at events occurring in these intelligent times. In a lesser number of words, their lyrics resemble that of gangsta' & horrorcore rap genres.

As a hip hop enthusiast who enjoy forms of music such as pop, R&B, slow rock and little amounts of country and classical music, I can safely say that these guys are heading out to be the sensation that the rock/rap community has been waiting ever since the genre shift of Linkin Park, the prolonged absence of Limp Bizkit and the forever distracted Slipknot.

And I do hope that Hollywood Undead captures the likes of Eminem, D12 or Yelawolf who commercialized and internationalized the horrific but disturbingly peaceful genre known as Horrorcore.

Here is to Hollywood Undead and their long and successful journey ahead.

American Tragedy is now available at store shelves near you. A must listen for rock and rap music fans alike.

Hollywood Undead Rocks Buffalo, NY! | News

Hollywood Undead @ Town Ballroom Buffalo, NY April 10, 2011
By Steve Bowe

I love it when a band comes out and stirs up so much controversy that it pits people against each other. It’s proof that they’re good enough to create strong feelings in both directions. Either way, like it’s always been said, “any publicity is good publicity.” You can go out and tell everyone how bad these guys are, but the universal truth from an action like that is if those derogatory words went into the ears of someone who wasn’t a fan already, there’s a 50/50 chance that you haven’t steered someone away from the band. You’ve actually created another rabid member of the group’s following.

Since the onslaught of Swan Songs in 2008, the guys have slowly fed their fans with small doses of things new and fresh, but the American Tragedy is truly the band’s 2nd release. I have to say, when I first heard “Swan Songs," I was unimpressed. Point blank, I had a hard time being convinced. Then I spoke with them a couple of years ago and realized that Charlie and I had actually been drunk together in a tiny bar in Hollywood, before HU was even a band. That chat session ended and they proceeded to destroy the stage for the rest of the night.

I played the disc much louder on the way home and had no doubt of what had just happened. Sex, drugs & rock n’ roll have experienced a rebirth. Hollywood Undead can, and do, party like rock stars. The crazy thing about them is that you can’t really call it “rock n’ roll.” You can’t call it “metal.” You can’t call it ”pop.” The twist is that it’s all of the above, and done quite well. Here’s my analysis: Imagine that Lou Pearlman wanted to make another perfect boy band. Then picture him bagging on the squeaky clean pretty boy auditions and rolling down to the county lockup to grab the right guys.

Hollywood Undead puts on a fantastic show. Last Sunday, in Buffalo, New York, was no exception. They’re serious about delivering a show to their fans and they obviously have fun while doing it. For example, Funny Man puts a kid from the crowd on his shoulders for “Paradise Lost?” How many kids DREAM of that kind of thing happening? An “Undead” mix started the show, then they went into it live and the entire Towne Ballroom went wild. One thing to note was Danny's onstage delivery. Deuce was an integral part of the band and did a great job. Some skeptics may have had doubts about a replacement for the band’s voice of melody, but I can promise you, Danny brought it to the stage. Not to say that Deuce was bad, but Danny is undeniable. He's powerful, melodic and energetic. Thumbs up for “the new guy.” You know it’s a good show when you exit the venue on a Sunday night and the crowd is still going wild and ready to party outside the doors . That’s exactly what went down last Sunday in Buffalo.

A Hollywood Undead show is more than a performance that you watch from the other side of the stage. This is a band that makes you feel like you are truly are an important part of the experience. With so many bands that look like they could be working in the cubicle next to you, it’s good to see a band that puts on masks and acts like a bunch of rockstars. After all, that’s what they are, right? Hollywood Undead gives you every last dime that you put into the ticket you bought.

Kerrang Reviews Hollywood Undead's American Tragedy! | News

American Undead

LA rap-metallers Hollywood Undead earned themselves lovers and haters with their hard-partying debut album in 2008. But now they’re delving deeper into the human condition…

Some people really hate Hollywood Undead. So much so that if you type the words ‘Hollywood Undead are’ into Google, ‘posers’ is the top Instant Suggestion. There is a Facebook group simply titled ‘I Hate Hollywood Undead’. A quick perusal of comments left under some of their YouTube videos proves just as damning, where all manner of vitriolic abuse, charming insults and idle threats are directed at the Los Angeles sextet.

“A lot of people do seem to have it in for us,” laughs their motormouth MC Johnny 3 Tears, shrugging it off like it’s no big deal. “But for me, that just confirms we’re doing something right.”

Formed in their native LA in 2005 by Johnny, co-vocalists Funny Man and Shady Jeff, guitarists J-Dog and Charlie Scene, Drummer Da Kurlzz and former singer Deuce, the band wore theatrical masks to compliment the mystique of their pseudonyms; the idea being that they “could be anybody”, and enjoy a certain freedom and anonymity. Debut album Swan Songs was released in the U.S. in 2008, inspiring an equal measure of adoration and revulsion with its eclectic mix of metal, hip-hop and pimped-out pop anthems. After 74 weeks in the Billboard Chart, the record was released in May 2009 in the UK, the band followed it up by selling out every night of their six-date tour and opening up the main stage that year’s Download Festival. But in the wake of their success, a schism in the camp led to Deuce leaving the band in early 2010 and being replaced by ex-American Idol contestant Danny Murillo. “Musical differences” was the only official line on the fall out, though it was heavily rumoured he was voted out of the band.

But as the songs came together throughout the year for their forthcoming second album American Tragedy, the Hollywood Undead outlook was changing too. Gone was the narcissistic, carefree attitude of old and in its place was an edgier, more honest approach.

“It’s more emotionally interesting,” reckons Johnny of the new album’s vibe. “When we wrote Swan Songs, the human condition was better off than it is right now. [People have] lost their collective feeling of optimism and as artists we can’t help but [feel] that. We aren’t just one of those bands you listen to when you’ve broken up with your girlfriend. The album goes deeper than that and deals in more of life’s calamities.”

In typical Hollywood Undead style, the darkest of subjects are treated with unflinching, uncompromising candour. On Bullet – an unnervingly jaunty, almost nursery rhyme-like-ditty – the band deals with depression and suicidal thoughts (‘I’m sitting on the edge with my two best friends | One’s a bottle of pills and one’s a bottle of gin’). On Pour Me – a swaying, anthemic sing-along – Johnny tackles the issue of his decade-long battle with the bottle. Something that he admits is an ongoing day-to-day challenge.

“Pour Me is the most honest song I’ve ever written,” he confesses. “It’s so revealing, it makes me nervous. But it’s about turning something ugly into something pretty. I wrote it after a three-week binge I can barely remember. Then I woke up one morning, poured myself a drink and wondered what the fuck I was doing to myself”.

“I’ve come to realise it’s going to be a struggle forever,” he continues. “But life is a struggle and the important thing is artistic honesty. If you can’t be honest when you write about that sort of thing then you have no business doing it in the first place.”

Elsewhere on the record, Hollywood Undead are still swaggering through the bars and clubs of LA like a real-life last gang in town straight out of TV show Entourage. They can still party and “hold it down with the best of them”. But something has changed on these songs. If Swan Songs was the soundtrack to a classic Saturday night fun-fest, American Tragedy also tells the tale of the inevitable Sunday morning hangover, where the consequences are felt hard and heavy.

“Songs like Gangsta Sexy or Comin’ In Hot are all about the moment,” says Johnny. “They’re honest, biographical songs based on our real lives, about going out, that feeling of ‘let’s do something, let’s go fucking crazy’. But then Pour Me is the ultimate result of that, looking at it 10 years down the line. That’s the biggest appeal about Hollywood Undead for me: there are no limitations. We’ve got the ups and downs, all on one record.

The unique appeal of Hollywood Undead is something Johnny and his band are hoping more people will better understand on American Tragedy. It’s hoped that those who had knives out for them before or who “missed the satire” first time around, give them a second shot and a chance to redeem themselves.

“Most bands are generic and play into a safety net,” the vocalist argues. “We do things differently from the norm and avoid the obvious. We could be one of the million bands out there playing it safe, but instead we are true to ourselves. No matter what, we’re always going to progress. Our music will always be different and challenging. True fans realise that and as years go by, people change and the best, most honest music changes too.”

Like any band who have just released a new album, pride and optimism are currently riding high in the Hollywood Undead camp. But with that promise and potential comes a fear of the future unknown. It’s a fear that the special bond they have worked hard to forge with their fan base could be compromised should things truly take off and become bigger than they ever dreamed.

“I am worried about losing that connection,” Johnny admits. “Hollywood Undead fans are great kids. They are also people I actually like and enjoy hanging out. For now I’m going to absorb every moment of it and try to reciprocate their love as much as possible. But we have to grow. There has to be some king of business aspect to it, because this is how we pay our bills.”

“I have a 16-month-old daughter, “He continues, passionately. “Music is what I do not just for me, but for her future. It’s all I know and probably all I’ll ever do. That’s how serious this is to me. To be able to go anywhere and play to 2,500 kids every night would be rad. To have some kind of worldwide success with this would be a trip, man”.

Love them or hate them, Hollywood Undead are coming back and demanding your attention. Indifference is not an option.

Hollywood Undead’s album American Tragedy is out now via A&M/Octone. The band play the Download Festival in June. See the Gig Guide for details.

Hollywood Undead's American Tragedy No. 4 on Billboard! | News

Who are Hollywood Undead, and what are they doing with the fourth-biggest album in the country?

By Kyle Anderson

This week’s Billboard album chart tosses out a few curveballs—notably Adele‘s return to the top spot, besting Britney Spears’ second-week Femme Fatale sales nearly seven weeks out from her sophomore album’s Feb. 22 release.

But the biggest shocker sits at number four, where Hollywood Undead‘s American Tragedy has set up shop with around 67,000 copies sold in its debut week.

So what exactly is Hollywood Undead, and how did they crash the charts?

Let’s answer the first question first: Hollywood Undead consists of six members: Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog, Charlie Scene (prescient!), Da Kurlzz, Funny Man and Danny (not much of a sobriquet there, Danny).

Not surprisingly, they hail from Los Angeles, and their sound is informed by SoCal hip-hop and a sort of punk-metal fusion—American Tragedy features production by the likes of Kevin Rudolf and S*A*M & Sluggo.

Other things you should know about Hollywood Undead: The six members all wear masks, some of which have changed since the release of their 2008 debut Swan Songs; they spent the first part of the year on tour called “The Nightmare After Christmas” that also featured Stone Sour and Avenged Sevenfold; the single “Hear Me Now” charted reasonably well on Billboard but did big business on iTunes; and they really, really like drinking (“Comin’ in Hot,” an almost absurd ode to destroying brain cells with booze, features lyrics like “We drink so much Goose/ We’re turning into geese”).

Here’s the real question: How is it that a group of rap-rock dudes in masks managed to break through in 2011?

The tracks on American Tragedy (especially “Gangsta Sexy” and “Lights Out”) do have a swagger to them, and you can certainly pump your fist to their choruses. And with Linkin Park trying to become a stadium-sized version of Radiohead, Limp Bizkit forever on hiatus, Slipknot distracted by side projects, and Korn long ago shedding their swampy funk, Hollywood Undead have filled a void. Perhaps there is always a need for dudes rapping angst over loud guitars—and as Eminem proved with Recovery, the market for white-guy anger is still very much open.

I’ll just go ahead and give Charlie Scene the last (classy) word on the success of American Tragedy: “I gotta be honest with everyone: I was really looking forward to the opportunity to be on top of Britney this week, but being right behind her and Adele is a memory we’ll relish forever.”

» music-mix.ew.com

Boston Herald Interviews Johnny 3 Tears of Hollywood Undead! | News

Musical and Visual Hooks Lead to Rise of the Undead
By Dave Wedge

If there’s one thing every rock star wannabe knows, it’s that KISS’ makeup transformed the band from just another New York club act into an international spectacle.

That lesson has certainly not been lost on Los Angeles rap-rock newcomers Hollywood Undead.

“More than anything, we wanted a visual representation that we considered striking and cool-looking and creative,” Johnny 3 Tears, one of the group’s six vocalist/musicians, said last week, speaking by phone while visiting Disney World with his 2-year-old daughter. “We’re all into graffiti, and the masks are an enabler to get something across rather than just the music. It was just a creative outlet for us, and we ran with it.”

It’s tough to dispute the impact a strong visual aspect can have — especially masks and makeup. Just ask Slipknot and Mudvayne in metal and Insane Clown Posse in rap.

Hollywood Undead, a crew of elementary school friends from the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles, may have taken visual cues from those acts, but musically, their sound is a pop-tinged gumbo of rap, rock, alternative, punk and dance. The group brings its traveling dance-rap carnival to the House of Blues tonight, one day after the release of its sophomore disc, “American Tragedy.”

“It’s 90 percent rock and then a 10 percent tinge of (hip-hop) programming,” 3 Tears (real name George Ragan) said. “It’s very natural, and I think that’s why the band has worked.”

Though frequently lumped into the crunkcore scene with fellow West Coasters Broke-NCYDE, Holly-wood Undead’s sound is much less abrasive and more pop-rock driven.

3 Tears cringes at the comparison and is quick to distance his band from that often-criticized crew, calling it “terrible stuff.”

“We don’t sound anything like them,” the 26-year-old protested.

More apt comparisons would be to the poppy dance-rock of 3OH!3 or the rap-rock of Linkin Park. You can also hear the influence of the Beastie Boys’ wise-cracking party rap and Eminem’s psych ward-ready angst.

The first single from the new album, “Hear Me Now,” is a Sunset Strip-inspired nu-glam anthem marked by rapper Charlie Scene’s personal lyrics of struggle and loss. The disc is packed with boozed-up party jams such as “Levitate,” “Comin’ in Hot” and the Auto-Tuned blunt-fest “Gangsta Sexy,” but there are also syrupy pop ballads, including “Pour Me” and the Kevin Rudolf-produced “Coming Back Down.”

“Before, when we were younger, we were more influenced by the music going on then. When you’re 18, you try to sound like what you’re listening to,” 3 Tears said. “But we just let go of that. We started making music we wanted to make and did whatever we wanted to. It’s become more musical.”

As for the ever-present legion of Internet haters, he said he “ignores” them.

“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “But I guess if no one hates you, you’re not as successful as you think you are. The more people hate us, then the more people must also love us.”

» news.bostonherald.com

Hollywood Undead "American Tragedy" Review - 5 Out of 5 Stars
By Rick Florino

Hollywood Undead dispense with any pleasantries and go right for the throat on their brand new album, American Tragedy.

It's an approach that serves them very well though as the band's follow-up to their gold-selling debut Swan Songs is a masterpiece in its own right. Instead of breaking and bending to pressures of the zeitgeist or snapping into Swan Songs 2, Hollywood Undead built a darker, deeper, and far deadlier ride this time around. It all starts with a trip downstairs too…

American Tragedy's opener "Been To Hell" grinds from an industrial chug into a hauntingly catchy chorus. J-Dog spits vitriol as the production edges into Downward Spiral territory perfectly complemented by his comrades' verses. "Apologize" is a wiseass bitch-slap to detractors, haters, and posers worldwide. There's an ear to ear shit-eating grin on Danny's face as he perfectly croons, "But we can harmonize, even if we sound like shit." That's the irony. His voice reverberates brilliantly on a song that's bound to get the club popping, while making fun of it. There's wit and wisdom from Charlie Scene on "Comin' In Hot" and a beat that's ready for any dance floor as L.A.'s industrial steam-punk Wu-Tang Clan raps and rolls through one hilarious verbal jab after another. Funny Man's raps still stand out with a hilarious bravado and braggadocio few MCs in any phase of the game can match, and "I Don't Wanna Die" bleeds with a raw fury reminiscent of early Nine Inch Nails as the refrain "I don't wanna die, so you're gonna have to" rings through the bowels of every city's underbelly. There are two moments that make this album a classic though. The first comes during "Bullet." After an acoustic intro, the song tells a potent and poignant tale of longing for suicide. However, it's the sunniest and catchiest tune on American Tragedy. That's where Hollywood Undead's genius lies—in that dangerous space between unforgettable and unsettling. Johnny 3 Tears rips open his soul much like Jonathan Davis here. However, 3 Tears offers even more catharsis on "Pour Me." It's a tale about the loneliness of boozing and using, but it's got a heavenly hook. In many ways, it's Hollywood Undead's equivalent of Eminem's "Stan"—an evil power ballad that everyone who hears it will feel.

"Tendencies" is a murderous electro rocker that shocks and shakes, but be sure to pick up the deluxe edition in order to hear the ominous elegy for the American Dream—"S.C.A.V.A." The economy's shit. Traditional mores have been raped by reality TV show. There's no guidance from the political infrastructure. However, there's nothing tragic about American Tragedy, and as the world burns, Hollywood Undead are throwing the party to end all parties.

Deal with it.

For all the crap they seem to get, when evaluated on their own terms, these masked maniacs have put together one hell of an album that will leave fans’ heads buzzing long after the clubs have let out and the hangover sets in. American Tragedy is wildly fun, a head-thumping, booze-chugging, 14 track-long hedonistic binge. The Los Angeles–based rap-rock sextet is relentless in its flows, masterfully mixing tasty beats with catchy choruses and enough distorted guitars to give its songs a gritty, metallic halo. The group’s first album, 2008's surprise smash Swan Songs, was an impressive mix of tongue-in-cheek rhymes atop bleak, apocalyptic rock-inspired tracks. And Hollywood Undead pick up where they left off with this follow-up, which bounces from start to finish with very few low points. “Been to Hell” is a scorching opener and the album closer, “Tendencies,” is a crushing rap-rock masterpiece. In between, the band experiments a bit with the more Linkin Park–esque “Levitate” and a disturbingly upbeat song about a man attempting suicide, “Bullet.” “Comin’ In Hot” is a party anthem destined for endless play in clubs. The weaker points in the record are the ballads, “Coming Back Down” and “Pour Me,” but these are easily forgotten among the album’s many undeniably addictive future hits.

In the ironically self-aware “Apologize,” the band proclaims, “We don’t apologize, and that’s just the way it is.” Haters will hate, but that won’t stop the oncoming party riot that is Hollywood Undead. And, really, when it’s this fun, why fight it?

Alternative Addiction gives Hollywood Undead's American Tragedy 4.5 out of 5 Stars! | News

American Tragedy: Hollywood Undead

Hollywood Undead is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I have an ‘I don’t like bands with masks’ policy. That together with I’m not a huge rap fan and I’m generally not that fond of ‘simple’ songs about sex and well… there’s no reason I should like Hollywood Undead. But I do, I was a fan of the voice of Deuce and his work on the last album. Some good work from the rest of the group coupled with his work on the choruses; well “Swan Songs” was a good record. Deuce ducked out and they found a replacement in Daniel Murillo. His work here is good and Hollywood Undead has more than an apt replacement. So the new vocalist/music writer is better than the old one. But what about the new record, is it better or worse than the last one? This album is clearly superior to the debut album. The main reason why is because everything is ten to twenty times thicker here than on the last album. This album isn’t just guys rapping on top some subtle stuff, this time the music is thick and solid and the music does just as much work as they rapping does. That and they’ve toned done the Eminem impressions… and well it’s just an altogether better album. The choruses are crisper and everything is just all around better. It feels more dramatic and Murillo’s voice is superior to Deuce’s too. “American Tragedy” is a good album and there’s a ton of content here, 14 songs on a normal version, iTunes has tons of bonus content with the album too, so that’s a clear perk. It’s true that Hollywood Undead isn’t for everyone, but this is a good album to put on during a party and it’s got a few good songs that you’ll come back to. I’m not a huge fan, but I’m a fan nonetheless.

Hollywood Undead: American Tragedy
By Robert Kelly

Hollywood Undead's second studio album "American Tragedy," scheduled to be released April 5th was actually a pleasant surprise. Having a sound Pigeon-holed as "Rap/Rock" I was a little skeptical going in. To me, bands that go for the Rap/Rock sound either pass or fail. Well upon further inspection I give them a resounding PASS! The songs are not limited to the usual format or template. Blending good lyrics with nice delivery over outstanding music and beats, "American Tragedy" hits a home-run. Songs like "Coming Back Down" and "Been to Hell" not only have lyrically mind-blowing verses but melodically anthem-ish chorus' that are sure to have the guys as well as the girls singing along and waving their hands in the air. Be sure to get a copy of "American Tragedy" and get your ass to the club when they come around... Support the scene, don't be a tool... Damn the man... SAVE THE EMPIRE!!!

» shockwavemagazine.com

Hollywood Undead Featured in Kerrang! | News

Loved. Loathed. Twisted. Controversial.
HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD
ARE WINNING FANS AND ALIENATING PEOPLE IN EQUAL MEASURE…

CHARLIE SCENE, vocalist, guitarist, and self-proclaimed lyrical genius with Los Angeles rap-rock outfit Hollywood Undead has a theory as to why so many people are starting to love his band.

“It’s because it’s totally different. For the past 10 years music was so repetitive, with the same shit coming out,” he explains. “You just get tired of listening to the next Foo Fighters song. Everything was getting boring and then something new and different happens and people can relate to it.”

Sitting next to Charlie in the band’s dressing room at Leeds Metropolitan University – the third venue of a sold-out UK tour – Johnny 3 Tears, vocalist and self-proclaimed band hard-ass, also has a theory as to why so many people hate his band. And, as it turns out, it’s much the same one.

“A lot of people don’t like us solely because we’re new and you can’t try to bracket the music the way you can other bands,” he offers.

With their debut album Swan Songs released here last summer – some eight months after its U.S. release – the band hit the UK as heavily as they could. A stint supporting The Blackout in May, an appearance at the Slam Dunk festival and an opinion-dividing but frenetic main stage opening slot at June’s Download festival set the band up for their first headline tour on our shores in December.

Hollywood Undead’s energetic genre mish-mash incorporating hip-hop, punk, rock and pop initially saw them tagged with the unflattering scream-crunk label but it’s certainly not a description the band themselves embrace, or even recognise.

“I don’t even know what the fuck that is,” sneers Johnny with a look of utter disdain. “I don’t know what crunk is and we’re not emotional.”

They’re certainly not that. Pick any song from Hollywood Undead’s album and you’ll find lyrics that, littered with references to ‘bitches’ and ‘faggots’, smack of unapologetic misogyny and homophobia.

“It’s silly that people consider us offensive,” Johnny says in his band’s defence. “There’re so many bands that have said things like this before but we get all this bullshit. Do people not realise that it’s not meant in a literal way? People still seem to get pissed off for some reason, though. Maybe they’re bored or religious.”

Perhaps it’s the simple fact that people have overlooked an important element of the band – pointed out in album opener Undead – ‘What, you can’t see the sarcasm in the verses I spit?’.

But what of a track like Black Dahlia? With a title referencing the infamous murder case and a dark lyrical bend, the song appears to be have a subtext about killing the girl who broke Johnny’s heart.

“It’s not meant like I’m literally going to stab my girlfriend to death but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it at one point,” Johnny shrugs. “I’d never do it – I don’t wanna go to jail and I don’t like blood that much but let’s say those things exist in my head and I’m going, ‘God, I just wanna kill this bitch’. One of the reasons people respond well to our music is because we’re saying things they’re thinking but maybe they don’t have the balls to say.

“We’re saying it’s okay to be weird. It’s okay to want to stab somebody sometimes. You never wanted to kill a bitch, man?”

Er, no.

FORMED IN 2005, Hollywood Undead adopted a distinctive masked look not to hide their identities, but simply to stand out.

Unlike an emergent Slipknot, they had no compunction about appearing unmasked in public and indeed the masks only make a brief appearance in their current live show. Exploiting the power of online social networking sites to the fullest – their Myspace page has had in excess of 130 million plays – Johnny is keen to stress they’re not just an online phenomenon.

“Every band has Myspace but 99.9 per cent of them aren’t successful,” he says. “If people are listening to our music, it’s because the music’s good, not because of our Myspace page. To us, touring is far more important. Ultimately, it’s how you’re going to survive as a band.”

And on this tour, vocalist Daniel Murillo, who has replaced founding member Deuce, is making his UK debut, despite not being a full-time member as unresolved legal issues continue with the band’s former singer. While internet rumors claim Deuce is taking time out to work on a solo album, Johnny unequivocally states he left the band before their U.S. tour in September.

“Deuce is a piece of shit, fucking cocksucker,” Johnny offers. “Nah, I’m only kidding…Sort of. It was musical differences, as boring and clichéd as that sounds.”

But that aside, Hollywood Undead certainly can’t be accused of being boring onstage. As the whole front section of the Leeds Met pump their fists and sing along to the set, it’s unclear how many fans either recognise or care about the sarcasm and literal meanings or otherwise contained in the band’s lyrics. What is clear, though, is that this audience absolutely adores them and Undead fever is spreading with the wildfire virulence of a rage-infected monkey bite.

“They’re just a brilliant band,” reckons 16-year-old Aimee, who’s been queuing in the rain for over two hours in order to secure a place near the front. “I saw them at Slam Dunk and they’re amazing live.”

Do you think they’re offensive?

“Maybe,” shrugs 17-year-old Zoe. “They’re not to me, though. It’s more just a laugh and the sort of band you can have a really good time to.”

With a Gold-certified album in the States, 20,000-plus UK sales, and a successful year on the road behind them, Hollywood Undead are looking set to have an interesting 2010. With plans afoot to begin work on album number two – which will, they say, see the band evolve while retained the Hollywood Undead fundamentals – the quintet are getting ready to expand their fan base, whether their detractors like it or not.

“I’d like to see how big this thing can get, I have some houses picked out in the hills above the ‘hood,’ admits Johnny with a grin. “Seriously though, all that stuff is secondary to the music. Over time you can lose what it meant to you at the beginning, but to see what it means to an audience inspires you and makes it worthwhile as an artist.

“In 2010 I’d just like to see more people at our shows,” he adds, “and influence more people to think as twisted as I do,”

Prepare yourselves, people.
