Biography

What began as a pipe dream in a Minneapolis garage has evolved into one of the most exciting bands to come out of the Midwest.  Dropping Daylight blends the piano-based songwriting of Sebastian Davin, with the power and energy of a great young rock band (guitarist / brother Seth Davin, bassist Rob Burke, and drummer Allen Maier).  The result is a unique sound that displays a musical maturity beyond their years.

Armed with a loyal following built on the back of hundreds of shows, the piano-laced rock band Dropping Daylight is gearing up to release their debut album Brace Yourself on Octone Records. Hailing from Minneapolis, the band's debut EP Back to Nowhere garnered regional airplay throughout the Midwest and had tracks appear on MTV's "The Real World."  The band toured with Simple Plan, Yellowcard and the 2004 Vans Warped Tour. In 2005, they released their second EP, Take A Photograph, which garnered them a "You Hear It First" spotlight on MTV.   Dropping Daylight toured to support their EP with Lucky Boys Confusion, Motion City Soundtrack, Mae, Say Anything, Jason Mraz, The Plain White T's and Unwritten Law. Their first full-length album, Brace Yourself, was produced by David Bendeth (Hawthorne Heights, Breaking Benjamin) and will be released June 13 on Octone Records (Maroon 5, Flyleaf). Their non-stop touring schedule will include upcoming dates with Phantom Planet, Flyleaf and this summer's Vans Warped Tour.

The band originally began as Sui Generis in the winter of 2001.  Friends and schoolmates Sebastian and original drummer, Jake Englund, found themselves disillusioned by the wholly unoriginal music flooding the airwaves, and united to create something completely original and without equals.  With this, the very definition of the Latin ‚"Sui Generis", the band was begun.  When not at school or work, they spent their spare time recording their first full length CD, playing all the instruments themselves.  Once they felt they had something going they teamed up with school friend, Rob Burke.  In order to help round out their sound, they looked to Sebastian's younger brother Seth on guitar.  The band changed their name to Sue Generis and spent the next year playing club and college gigs around the northern plain region developing and honing their repertoire.  In October 2003, they released their first CD, Back to Nowhere.

In 2004, Sue Generis showcased at SXSW in Austin, Texas, creating a buzz that could be heard from coast to coast. It seemed the industry finally awoke to their sound, and they spent the spring opening up for bands such as Jurassic 5 and showcasing for record labels and agents in Los Angeles and New York. They signed to Octone Records (Maroon 5, Michael Tolcher, and Flyleaf) in the summer of 2004, and changed the name to Dropping Daylight. At the beginning of 2006 Englund and the band parted ways and through friends, the band heard of a great drummer who lived in Cleveland, Allen Maier.  It wasn't long before Allen was on a plane, heading off to tour with the band and become their new drummer.
